Before paying a tuition deposit in Canada, Pakistani students should check whether their school and programme can support Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility. Graduating from a DLI does not automatically make every programme PGWP-eligible.
Basic PGWP eligibility
IRCC states that eligible applicants generally need to complete a PGWP-eligible programme at an eligible DLI, maintain the required student status and apply within the permitted period after completion.
Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates
For current rules, graduates of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees do not face the field-of-study requirement that applies to some other programmes. However, language requirements apply to many PGWP applicants.
College and other non-degree programmes
For certain non-degree programmes, students whose study permit was submitted on or after the relevant rule-change date may need to graduate from an eligible field of study. This is why checking only the institution name is not enough.
Language requirement
IRCC now requires language evidence for many PGWP applicants. Degree graduates generally need the higher language threshold, while some college/polytechnic/non-university graduates use a different threshold. Check the current CLB/NCLC rules before planning your post-study pathway.
How long can a PGWP be?
The length depends on programme type and duration, plus passport validity. IRCC currently allows eligible master’s graduates to qualify for a three-year PGWP even where the master’s programme is shorter than two years, provided it meets the minimum duration and other requirements.

- Is the institution a DLI?
- Is the specific programme PGWP-eligible?
- Does a field-of-study rule apply?
- What language proof will be needed after graduation?
- Is the programme long enough for your intended PGWP outcome?
